Noticed a sudden dip in your online ranking over the weekend?

As confirmed by Google, there has been an update to the core search ranking and there is nothing webmasters can do to fix their sites if they have dropped in rankings.

Also, Google’s Danny Sullivan stated that they were not targeting low quality websites. He explicitly confirmed that there is nothing wrong that can be fixed in sites that lose ranking.

This announcement is important because it squashes the usual Phantom Update speculation. Google is not targeting “low quality” signals.

Google ran a ‘broad core algorithm update’ sometime during the weekend and this has impacted the appearance and ranking of several websites in the SERPs.

As is common knowledge, Google is known to run these types of updates several times a year, and there is nothing a site can specifically do to fix their ranking once these updates run. Post these updates, some sites may note a drop or rise in their overall ranking and performance.

What do you do if your rankings have dropped?

The answer, according to Google, is really nothing. Google went on to explain that "as with any update, some sites may note drops or gains." Google says your site may be fine, "there's nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well," they said. "Instead, it's that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded," Google added.

"There's no "fix" for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content," Google said. So wait it out and improve your overall site and "over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages," Google says.
